How Can AI Coaching and Human Collaborate?

Updated: Mar 18

The emergence of AI-driven coaching platforms has sparked an intriguing conversation in leadership development and personal coaching spaces. Some fear that AI could overshadow traditional human coaching; and I see both can co-exist and complement. This transition is not about competition; it’s about how humans and AI can collaborate to amplify coaching's impact, combining the best of both worlds.

The Rise of AI Coaching

AI platforms, like BetterUp and MarshallBot (developed by renowned leadership expert Marshall Goldsmith), offer data-driven insights and feedback at unprecedented speeds. They promise efficiency, scalability, and objectivity—qualities that are transforming the way leaders learn and evolve. Despite their impressive capabilities, AI alone cannot fully replicate the nuanced, empathetic approach that human coaches bring.

In fact, Goldsmith himself emphasizes the power of AI as a complement to human insight, helping leaders sharpen their skills while still valuing the "human factor" of deeper emotional intelligence.

What AI Can Do

AI can quickly analyze patterns in leadership behavior, offer feedback on performance, and provide reminders or suggestions to drive behavioral change. For example, AI-driven platforms can track key metrics and personal development goals, offering nudges to maintain focus on growth areas.

What Human Coaches Excel At

Where AI lacks, however, is in understanding the deep emotional and psychological layers that drive human behavior. Humans can navigate ambiguity, adjust based on shifting personal narratives, and help clients dig into subconscious barriers to change. Coaches draw from their lived experience and empathy to create safe spaces where clients feel understood, not just evaluated.

Why the Best Approach Is a Partnership

Imagine an individual working through complex career transitions. AI can analyze data from previous transitions, predict challenges, and recommend strategies. But when deeper feelings of doubt or fear arise, a human coach can step in to help the client confront these emotions and develop self-awareness that drives true transformation.

Reflective Questions: Where Can AI Fall Short?
  1. How would an AI recognize subtle, non-verbal cues during a coaching session?

  2. What would make a human feel deeply connected to AI that allow them to feel understood and be ready to be vulnerable and deeply curious about themselves?

  3. Can AI respond to a client’s changing emotional state and navigate strategies based on intuition?

These are areas where AI might fall short, reinforcing the value of collaboration. AI can handle analytics and routine check-ins, freeing up human coaches to focus on the deep, transformational conversations that fuel long-lasting growth.

Conclusion: Leveraging Both AI and Human Expertise

The future of coaching isn't about choosing AI over humans—it’s about using AI to enhance what we, as coaches, do best. By combining AI's efficiency with the human touch, we can deliver an experience that is both scalable and deeply personal.
